Community Programs Sponsored by the Cranston Police Department
Neighborhood Watch Program:
This nationwide concept is important for security and crime prevention. Cranston has 48 areas covered under this program.
Fraud Presentations:
This is an awareness program to assist the public in identifying and recognizing scams that take advantage of trusting people.
Home Security Presentations:
This awareness program helps homeowners learn more about security and suspicious activity. It is intended to train them how better to identify possible suspects and to make their homes less of a target to those with criminal intent.
Bank Robbery Presentations:
Managers and tellers at local banks receive training relative to the proper method of dealing with and reacting to a bank robbery.
McGruff:
Presentations concerning drugs and safety are given to kindergarten and first grade children with the aid of secondary students.
Prom-time Presentations:
Informational presentations focusing on the problems of substance abuse and driving while impaired are conducted by celebrities or noted individuals in the substance abuse field. A discussion session follows the presentation, and the use of a vehicle that has been involved in an accident is employed.
Post-Prom Breakfast:
Community representatives, faculty members, and police officers sponsor a breakfast at the local YMCA. Included is full use of the YMCA, its activities, and facilities.
Driving While Intoxicated Presentations:
As part of driver's education curriculum, a police officer gives a two-hour block lecture on the problems and consequences of driving while under the influence.
Benefit Sporting Events:
Coordinated by the Community Police Unit, members of the Police Department, along with school faculty members of our schools, compete in sporting events to help raise funds for various student organizations.
School Liaison Program:
A police officer acts as a liaison between the Police Department and the School Department to help address problems that arise in the schools.
Seat Belt Safety:
Adults and children are given a presentation on the importance of the using safety belts while riding in vehicles.
Robo-Buddy:
This is a police car robot designed exactly like the cruisers used by officers on the street. Members of the Crime Prevention and D.A.R.E. program use it to help deliver messages to students in grades K-3 on topics such as the dangers related to talking to strangers, bicycle safety, playing together, etc.
Stolen/Forged Prescription Program:
In conjunction with the local pharmacies, the Cranston Police Department developed a code that allows pharmacists to contact police immediately when a stolen or forged prescription is passed. This program was developed and implemented with the assistance of the Cranston Pharmacists Association.
